Young Ruth is trying to revive Klinger’s Bookstore to new life. It was founded by her father, burned down during the war, and she is working hard to restore it. They are left alone with her son Petřík, her still optimistic sister-in-law Ruth, and her mother Alžběta, who lost her husband and son in the war and has withdrawn into seclusion. Against the backdrop of a newly divided Berlin and the struggles between occupying powers, everyday human stories unfold. The girl Lore, who stands homeless at their door, hides a painful secret. The beautiful Róza falls in love with her missing husband’s brother; it is a dangerous and complicated relationship, just like all those disrupted by the war. Together, Ruth, Róza, and Lore build the bookstore. When things start to go well for them, Ruth's impoverished husband unexpectedly returns from a prisoner of war camp. But in Berlin, an unprecedented flourishing begins. And Lore gets a revolutionary idea on how to give the bookstore a new direction.
