Description
The Miser is a classic five-act comedy by the French actor, writer, and playwright Molière, first performed in Paris at the Palais Royal theater in September 1668. The Miser is perhaps Molière's most famous comedy. The main character is a sixty-year-old widower, usurer, and heartless miser Harpagon, who is willing to sacrifice everything for money, even family and children. The loss of his wealth represents a loss of purpose and sanity for him. His character is tragicomic and represents Molière's proof that money naturally distorts character and interpersonal relationships. The term 'harpagon' has become synonymous with the prototype of a great miser, derived from the name of the main character.
