Description
The plot of the novel takes place in the 1880s in Tasmania. Brothers Karl and Pieter Kip, excellent Dutch sailors, are sentenced for the murder of Captain Gibson, on whose ship they were sailing. After landing in Tasmania, they are sentenced to death, which is later commuted to life in the galleys, despite their innocence, as the murder of the captain was committed by other sailors who wanted to seize the ship and engage in piracy. The impeccable and honorable past of both convicts prompts the ship's owner, Hawkins, to begin unraveling the web of judicial error. After a series of trials and tribulations, he eventually succeeds. How? As is customary with the author, it is based on a certain physical phenomenon, which the reader must discover for themselves.
