Description
Mr. Lockwood arrives at a farm called Thrushcross Grange from London to enjoy a quiet life in seclusion, and soon he becomes acquainted with the inhabitants of a nearby estate: a gloomy, lonely place called Wuthering Heights. Its owner, the dark and tempestuous Heathcliff, lives there with two young people, Cathy and Hareton. Through the tales of his servant Nelly, Mr. Lockwood gradually learns about the dramatic history of the inhabitants of Wuthering Heights and the love between Cathy's mother Catherine and Heathcliff. Their story, set in the inhospitable landscape of the Yorkshire moors, is not merely a romantic encounter between two loving people, but primarily a passionate relationship between two untamed, complicated personalities, whose relationship is marked by inequality, ambition, and a desire for revenge. This novel is the only work of writer Emily Brontë, and when it was published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, it did not evoke any extraordinary response, perhaps due to its unusual and complex composition or possibly the ambiguity of its main characters. Gradually, however, readers found their way to it, and it became one of the peaks of English literature.
