Charlotte Brontë tells the story of the orphaned Jane Eyre, who grows up in the house of her heartless aunt and endures loneliness and cruel treatment. After one incident, her wicked aunt sends her to a boarding school where the girls are mistreated – forced to live in winter with almost no food, physically punished, and made to wash in icy water. Jane's already sad fate becomes even harsher. However, this unhappy childhood strengthens her natural independence, strength, and spirit, which prove essential when she finds employment as a governess to the brooding Mr. Rochester.

As her feelings for Rochester deepen, Jane uncovers a terrible secret of Thornfield Hall, forcing her to make a definitive choice. Should she stay with Rochester and live with the consequences that may arise, or should she follow her convictions, even if it means leaving the man she loves?

The novel depicting a woman's quest for equality and freedom gained many admirers in its time and achieved great success with readers and critics alike. For its time, it is very progressive and does not merely replicate elements of romanticism, but also introduces new, realistic, and gothic motifs.
