The story of sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood takes place in the setting and atmosphere of the old English countryside, charming readers with its wit and grace for over two centuries. After the death of their father, the two main heroines must cope with the loss of social status, and like all impoverished girls of that time, their only chance of escaping their difficult situation lies in a favorable marriage. Marianne succumbs to the charm of a young man named Willoughby, and it seems that their affection is mutual. This is watched with concern by Colonel Brandon, a family friend who himself suffers from love for Marianne. Moreover, he does not trust Willoughby at all and apparently knows something bad about his past. The older sister Elinor begins a relationship with Edward Ferrars, but his family wishes for him to marry someone wealthier and tries to thwart his relationship with Elinor. Edward seems to be a characterful and honest man, yet from a certain point onward, he begins to behave coldly towards Elinor. In addition to facing the rigid conventions of their surroundings, the girls also struggle with their vastly different natures.
