The History of Bees narrates the first humble attempt by humans to tame bees, through conventional industrial agriculture to a future where bees have already gone extinct. It includes three stories about the relationships between parents and children and about human vulnerability. William is a disappointed biologist and seed merchant living in England in 1852. He is about to build a completely new type of hive that will bring him and his children honor and glory. George is a beekeeper living in the USA in 2007, and his farm is struggling to survive. However, he hopes that his son will be the salvation for the farm. Tao lives in the future in China, at a time when bees have already gone extinct. She works on hand pollination. More than anything else, she wants to ensure her son receives an education so that he can have a better life than hers. The History of Bees is a novel about the extinction of bees. All three stories intertwine, connecting the past, present, and future.
