The heroine of this novel about love, death, and grief is a woman who has just closed one chapter of her life. Brynn Wilder, who teaches contemporary American literature at a university, retreats to Wharton, a tourist-favorite town on the shores of Lake Superior between the USA and Canada, for the summer after her mother's passing, to rest and recharge. In a cozy inn, she befriends several quirky individuals – LuAnn, the eccentric owner; the gravely ill Alice, cared for by a married couple with an extraordinary story; and Dominic, a young man with a movie star smile and fascinating tattoos all over his body.
