In April 1933, the SS arrests and brutally tortures Harro Schulze-Boysena, a twenty-three-year-old publisher of the independent magazine Gegner. His close friend, a Jew named Henry Erlanger, does not survive the torture. From that moment on, Harro thinks of revenge. When he meets Libertas in 1934, who comes from an ancient German noble family and works at the film company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, not only does their story begin to unfold. From various contacts, a network of friendly and resistance circles gradually forms, opposing Nazi terror. More than one hundred and fifty fighters of the resistance movement include workers, employees, intellectuals, artists, both younger and older. Two-fifths are women — which is a rarity in the German resistance. Until their exposure by the Gestapo's special commission "Rote Kapelle" (Red Orchestra) in late summer 1942, Harro and Libertas, along with their friends, support Jews and politically persecuted individuals, distribute leaflets, and undertake sensational actions with stickers. Particularly dangerous activities include secret information from Harro Schulze-Boysena and Arvid Harnack from the Ministry of Aviation and Economy to the Allies.
