Description
Šumava was an extraordinarily attractive place for photographers during the times of the monarchy. It fulfilled romantic notions of a wild and desolate primeval forest with its centuries-old trees, ravines, bogs, and picturesque lakes. However, upon closer inspection, it became clear that it was full of life and human activity. Timber was extensively harvested here, precious metals were sought, and the glass industry developed. Settlements and villages flourished, and charming castles and churches were built. This new book by Pavel Scheufler tells the story of this now non-existent world of old Šumava. The publication presents over 140 predominantly unpublished photographs from his family collection, as well as engaging texts on how to read these photographs. It loosely follows the popular books Prague during the Emperor's Reign, Spa during the Emperor's Reign, Krkonošes during the Emperor's Reign, and Beer during the Emperor's Reign.
