Mafalda is now three years older, and her thirteenth birthday is approaching. The transformation from a little girl to a young girl is not easy for almost anyone, but Mafalda has to deal with much more serious problems than just 'ordinary' puberty and unsympathetic classmates. First and foremost, she has to come to terms with the fact that she has almost completely lost her sight – her illness has progressed, and she can barely recognize shadows and occasionally the color red; even though she tries to be as independent as possible, life 'in the dark,' as she calls it, is understandably not easy at all. And as if that weren't enough, there have been other challenging changes in her life: due to her illness, she had to move to a new apartment with her parents, she has to get used to the more demanding upper grade at school, and her father has lost his job. Additionally, her beloved cherry tree is now separated from her by the school fence, so she couldn't escape to it even if she wanted to. Mafalda faces everything as always, bravely and pragmatically. Moreover, her surroundings are ready to lend her a helping hand (or paw). And in moments when she really doesn't know what to do, she can always rely on some literary hero – who will it be this time?
