Description
Death on the Other Bank is a Czech-language detective novel set in the hectic early 1990s, when the upheaval affects both society and the homicide department. Richard Krauz has grown from a rookie into an independent detective and, together with his partner Jozef Fischer, known as Chosé, investigates a case that begins in spring 1994. Two boys find a partly buried, decomposing body on the bank of the Morava River. The corpse would not be unusual, except for the regular nine-millimetre hole in the back of its skull. The detectives immediately realize that it was not made by a drill, but by a bullet. They must discover which pistol fired it and whose hand held the weapon, while knowing nothing about either the victim or the killer. The dead man is not missed by anyone, and the investigation proves difficult. Nor do they yet know that the round hole in the skull will soon become a symbol of settling scores in the underworld that is just beginning to take shape.
