Mickey Haller is a well-known Los Angeles attorney who is approached by the head of the district attorney's office with a special offer. He wants him to take on the role of prosecutor in a certain high-profile case. Haller hesitates but ultimately gets convinced - partly because he is irritated by the defendant's persona. Jason Jessup was convicted twenty-four years ago for the murder of a twelve-year-old girl. However, the Supreme Court has now overturned that verdict based on DNA analysis, and Jessup has been released until a new trial. Moreover, he has become a media darling, selling the rights to books and films and portraying himself everywhere as a victim of judicial tyranny. Haller, however, remains convinced of his guilt, and therefore does everything he can to achieve Jessup's re-conviction despite the unfavorable circumstances. He finds the best possible investigator, Detective Bosch, and fights for every piece of evidence, for every witness testimony. At the same time, he discovers that not everything in the machinery of the district attorney's office is running as he originally imagined, and that justice often has to yield to political interests. Additionally, it seems that Jason Jessup is up to something nefarious...
