Description
Józó, the main character of the novel No Longer Human, narrates his seemingly ordinary and more or less normal life, even though he feels incapable of understanding human beings. His attempts to reconcile with the surrounding world begin in early childhood, continue in high school, where he becomes a clown to his peers to mask his alienation, and ultimately lead to a suicide attempt in adulthood. The author of the novel, Japanese writer Osamu Dazai, records the random cruelties of life and fleeting moments of human solidarity, understanding, and tenderness without sentimentality. One of the best-selling Japanese novels is proof that a significant literary work does not lose any of its timeless relevance over the years.
