He was said to be hunchbacked, deformed, and stuttered, but his mind was sharper and his thinking more penetrating than that of tall and healthy people. He could entertain listeners with animal fables and witty stories. Most ancient fables are attributed to Aesop; they have been retold many times in prose and verse, and his fables remain timeless. The world has fundamentally changed since then; people fly into space and communicate across the globe, but they are still governed by the same joys, passions, and vices as Aesop's contemporaries. That is why we understand them so well—both adults and children. The clever folks from Hloupětín are quirky inhabitants of a fairy-tale town, bumbling and foolish, who believe every nonsense and are easily fooled by any trickster. The more absurdities the Hloupětín neighbors engage in, the more we begin to sympathize with them, and eventually, their struggle against a malicious fate starts to impress us. Aren't we their descendants? Just look around, open a newspaper, or turn on the television to see that we too live in an era of absurdities and foolishness. Should we let this consume and torment us?
