Description
A family grave holds thirty-six urns. How much grief can one life contain? A year has passed since Sirpa’s mother died, and tonight Tuoniovna, the mythical daughter of death, will come for her soul. To come to terms with her mother’s death, Sirpa must try to understand her life. Why did her mother not love her? Why could she not accept the love of others? Through thirty-six objects from the past, memories and her mother’s diaries, Sirpa gradually finds answers to questions that have haunted her since childhood. Her mother, too, had a complicated relationship with her parents, and in her youth she was cruelly affected by an unhappy event. Her life was filled with disappointments and wrongs. Searching for the roots of generational trauma takes the author back to the beginning of the twentieth century. Her ancestors were marked by wars, imprisonment, oppression and turbulent social change. Grief, anger, unrequited love, and feelings of inadequacy and rejection pass from one generation to the next. Is it within human power to break this chain and find reconciliation?
