Description
This Czech-language poetry collection by Eli Hondl is a world of opposites. Its imagery can be lyrical and disenchantedly fragile, yet also angrily critical and raw. From the wreckage emerge “the mouths of white belugas” and “the songs of solitude’s tumours,” while silence and cries rooted equally in anger and sex appear soon afterwards. The poems are linked by the recurring theme of physicality, reflecting both the individual body and the body of society. Language itself is placed in a dual role, serving as a means of reckoning with the self: “swallow ideological language slowly / the pecked-out wound festers divine / but your third eye is far too clear.”
