This book recounts the tragic lives of people who died between 1948 and 1989 along the border between South Moravia and Lower Austria, as well as those who lost their lives there by accident. Near Mikulov, a monument bears their names in steel. Drawing on archival materials, eyewitness testimonies and their own research, Luděk Navara and Miroslav Kasáček trace these stories in chronological chapters, revealing tragedies involving electrified wire fences, minefields and border guards’ gunfire. The book also examines the mechanisms of state power that punished the desire for freedom with death. It restores the names of forgotten victims and, in many cases, their faces.
