The war ends in 1945, and a new era of history begins. That summer, the victorious Big Three—Great Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union—decide the future course of history in Potsdam. Berlin housewife Else Tietze fears for her son’s life, while American soldier Klaus Mann, the eldest son of the famous writer Thomas Mann, searches for Nazi criminals. Director Billy Wilder plans a comedy about life among the ruins of Berlin, where cafés and restaurants are reopening. German children beg Red Army soldier Vasily Petrovich for bread, while Japan awaits the final blow of the war. Over four months, the old world order collapses and a new one begins. Oliver Hilmes captures this unique atmosphere in a kaleidoscope of stories about winners and losers, victims and perpetrators, celebrities and ordinary people, conveying the joy and hope of the liberated, the fears of the defeated, poverty and sorrow, and newly gained freedoms.
