David Voda’s poetry is like a spiral: it stretches, contracts and grows, moving from concrete things and recorded situations, from the material to the spiritual and back again. It is possible to fall into it like a paper floor, see it in coloured blocks arranged on bare ground, hear it in the alto of hydrangeas and touch it while walking along the bottom of a wrinkle around a loved one’s mouth. “In the language of the Cree, Manitoba is the place where the prairie narrows so that the spirit can pass through the eye of a needle. Between life and death there is a rift; the ancestors come to eat from our plates and disappear, satisfied by our offerings. Through the cosmos, language sounds like walking, breaking loaves of snow and crushing the shells of ashen eggs. The spirit’s narrow passage can be entered from anywhere; all it takes is placing the door-knockers against your temples.”
