Description
This Czech-language edition presents Jaroslav Hašek’s famous, unfinished four-part novel The Good Soldier Švejk During the World War, a work translated into more than fifty languages and adapted for the stage, screen and comics. Although Hašek first published stories featuring Švejk in 1911, his wartime experience and disillusionment following the Bolshevik Revolution led to the novel’s creation. The story draws on numerous documents and texts referring to real events, places and people, while its exaggeration and grotesque humour ridicule official values and ideas, not only those of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. This edition follows Jarmila Víšková’s earlier edition and incorporates a newly discovered manuscript of part of the novel, adding several previously unknown passages to the third and fourth parts. The text is prepared by Zdena Wiendlová and Jiří Holý, who also provides the commentary and explanatory notes.
