First published in 1957, The Eternaut became part of South American literary heritage and a symbol of resistance to totalitarian regimes, on a cultural level compared with Borges and Cortázar. Legal disputes long prevented its introduction in Europe and the United States, making its present-day reading an exciting journey into the hidden history of popular culture. Attempts to adapt it began as early as the 1960s, but the adaptation was ultimately completed by Netflix.
