Description
This Czech-language novel follows a boy growing up in the Slovácko countryside amid the oppressive atmosphere of normalization-era Czechoslovakia. Seeking a brighter view of the world, he turns to independent culture and his own small adventures on the road. First love is awkward, while life passes in flashes of a carousel: a strict father, vocational school, a factory, a river and a large gravel pit with crystal-clear water. Above all, he longs to escape to official and secret concerts, where happiness means a plastic cup of beer, a battered guitar and a sleeping bag, until batons wielded by members of the Public Security enter the scene. Lubomír Větříšek’s narrative has the qualities of a compelling documentary: it is a true story of a generation for whom music represents the intoxication, courage and hope of freedom. At the same time, it is a raw yet touching book about growing up, tenderness and the difficulties of youth, and above all about living at full speed even in uninviting times.
