Description
In a world where words have vanished, the boundaries between things have disappeared and human civilization has changed beyond recognition. Monsters emerge from the nameless wilderness, ghosts walk among people and work in factories, and the remains of dreams are used as fuel. Steam trains cross the land, and one of them carries a naming commission that painstakingly searches for names for everything people once took for granted. A nameless namer travels with them, tasked with giving things their names even though she has none of her own. After a series of strange attacks, she must flee and set out with a patched-up ghost, a wailing monster, and a nameless animal that wanders among the shadows. Together, they search for her missing sister, the truth about her past, and her place in the world, while she gradually discovers that she may first have to change the world radically. This Czech-language novel combines post-apocalyptic scenery with playfully poetic imagery, adventure with reflections on language, the world, and human society. Is it harder to find the last great boundary word, or love and freedom?
