An architect, urban planner, designer, theorist and longtime teacher at the Faculty of Architecture in Brno, Bohuslav Fuchs ranks among the most important figures in Central European functionalism. His extensive body of work influenced the appearance of many Czechoslovak cities and forms a pillar of modern Czech architecture. Dramatic events of the twentieth century repeatedly affected his life, particularly the Communist period, when a fabricated accusation cost the respected architect his commissions, business and academic career. Despite these circumstances, Fuchs’s buildings, designed with an exceptional sense of functionality, layout, space, construction and overall aesthetics, connected Czechoslovak architecture with the leading centres of modern architecture in Western Europe and the United States. Bohuslav Fuchs was an architect whose work helped shape one of the most important periods in the history of Czech culture.
