A dystopian romance set in a terrifying future. It is the year 2364, and eighteen-year-old Liv Newman dreams of a future that will let her escape life in the lower class. She earns a living as a broker of emotional memories, using a neurochip in her brain to sell so-called fragments to wealthy clients. She may have sold a few memories somewhat illegally, but money means freedom, and that is what Liv wants more than anything. When a customer offers her an absurdly large sum for a highly dangerous assignment, Liv accepts without hesitation. Police rookie Adrian Rao, meanwhile, believes that a corrupt society needs order and a firm hand above all else. When he discovers that certain dubious memory dealings are disrupting the brain chemistry of clients, he vows to eliminate the threat personally. Suspicion falls on Liv, but when Adrian finally tracks her down, he encounters an unexpected problem: her memories are gone. Can Adrian condemn a girl for crimes she does not remember committing? To make matters worse, their situation is complicated by a growing mutual attraction.
