Description
Memoirs of a Chinese Laborer
Chu An-ren has held many labor jobs across China. He worked as an assistant at a gas station. He did security work. He sold ice cream. He managed a clothing store. He handled packages at a logistics center. He delivered shipments. In unbearable heat and freezing cold, with chronically disrupted sleep, hungry, and uncertain at every step and about the future. All of these were terrible jobs — but paradoxically, they represented a space of freedom for him amidst a Chinese society obsessed with career and success. Chu An-ren could observe the people around him, learn about their fates, and write a personal chronicle of the Chinese workforce from an almost unseen perspective: he captures himself and his colleagues with a novelistic eye for detail, without losing sight of the context of contemporary China in which all these harsh stories unfold.
