Description
A powerful coming-of-age story with a dissociative disorder in bohemian 1990s New York
Alice Carričrová recounts her unconventional upbringing in the family of renowned painter Jennifer Bartlett and her charismatic father, European actor Mathieu Carričra. From an early age, Alice must grapple with her mother's memories of (likely fabricated) sexual abuse and her father's confusing interest. Her days are a mix of privilege, neglect, loneliness, and danger.
On the brink of adolescence, Alice tries to understand the world as her dissociative disorder erases her identity and manic episodes erase her reality. In countless situations, she searches for her own self: as a wild child in the music scene of downtown New York, in the shower with a razor in hand, as a patient in expensive psychiatric facilities and dysfunctional therapy groups. Ultimately, she finds meaning in caring for her elderly nanny and mother afflicted with Alzheimer's disease, in a romantic relationship with a recovering alcoholic, and in confronting her father, whose words and actions have split her apart.
