Description
A medieval detective novel in the style of Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose. Tallinn at the beginning of the fifteenth century is a rapidly expanding city with ambitions to become an important Hanseatic centre. The apothecary Melchior Wakenstede is an enigmatic figure: some respect him for his mysterious knowledge and scientific curiosity, while others fear the mystical aura surrounding him. When a mysterious murder takes place at the castle, Melchior is asked to lead the investigation. The victim is a high-ranking member of the Teutonic Order, which rules all of Estonia. Melchior immerses himself in the case and questions people from every level of society as he tries to uncover the truth. The situation soon becomes more complicated, however, as the number of victims begins to rise. Against his will, the apothecary is drawn into a whirlpool of lies, intrigues and dangerous practices.
