They left Earth to save humanity. But first, they will have to save themselves. We stand on the brink of environmental collapse on Earth. Humanity's last hope lies aboard a single ship called the Phoenix: eighty people have completed an elite selection program and are set to conceive a new generation of children in deep space. However, halfway to a distant yet habitable planet, a deadly bomb kills three crew members and throws the Phoenix off course. The investigation is entrusted to Asuka, the only surviving witness of the bombing, who felt a bit like an imposter even before the explosion. She was the last to be chosen for the mission, struggled with training on Earth, and has to represent Japan—a country she only partially knows as a half-Japanese girl growing up in America. She left behind her mother, with whom she has gradually become estranged, leaving her with only the Phoenix. The crew members begin to accuse each other, and Asuka is determined to find the culprit before their faith in the mission completely evaporates—or worse, before the bomber strikes again.
