Description
A cruel world described in language as clear as spring water. The author says that God’s task is to create, while people’s task is to name. Her fictional village of Pravěk is the centre of the universe, situated between the rivers Černá and Bělka and guarded on all four sides by the archangels Rafael, Gabriel, Michael and Uriel. This realistic story with fantastical elements takes place throughout the twentieth century and explores the destructive power of time. It follows the inhabitants of Pravěk and their daily struggle with ordinary life marked by great historical events. The individual chapters describe the time of the novel’s heroes: Michal and his wife Jenovefa, Míša and her coffee grinder, Kláska and her daughter Rúta, and the mysterious Game that consumes the landowner Popělský. They also explore the time of the underground mycelium and the orchard, as well as God, who exists outside time while also revealing himself through time and its transformations.
