Description
Being a woman in the Czech Republic is not easy. But it could be! For over a hundred years, Czech and Western society has been searching for answers to the so-called women's question. There are actually many questions. Some already have solutions, while others still provoke controversy. We have taken it for granted that women can vote, yet they are still viewed with suspicion in politics — who takes care of their children at home? We don't ask men such questions. Similarly, no one prevents women from holding any job position — as long as they can manage to get back into it after maternity leave during a complicated period. After all, they are mainly here for mothering. And if a woman has no children or even doesn't want them, then there must be something wrong with her. And what about when she wants to change established norms — after all, that's against nature! Journalist Silvie Lauder describes in her book 'Caught in the Gender Trap' what has stalled women's emancipation in the Czech Republic and what consequences it has. Not only for society but especially for women themselves, whether as structural disadvantages or almost ubiquitous violence — symbolic, verbal, sexual. In short, the time has come for decisive answers.
