Description
A story about the Hungarian revolution in 1956 with elements of magical realism. The Danube flows through Budapest. Csilla knows that this river has magical powers — when her family was in dire straits during World War II, it saved them from the Holocaust. But that was before the communists seized power in Hungary; before the secret police condemned and killed her parents; before she learned the truth about her father, which she would rather forget. Now Csilla tries not to draw too much attention to herself, as she plans to escape from the country that never loved her enough. However, all her carefully thought-out plans fall apart when a court unexpectedly acquits her parents and clears their names. This event ignites a spark and triggers fiery protests throughout the city. Revolts in neighboring Eastern Bloc countries fuel calls for revolution in Hungary. Unrest grows, and the Angel of Death himself appears in the streets of Budapest. Csilla must decide whether to believe in the rebirth of her imperfect country and be willing to risk her life to save it — or whether to let it burn to ashes.
