Description
Autistic women are like elusive shadows. An adult woman with high-functioning autism is practically an unknown phenomenon to us — if she appears in film or literature, it is likely as a female version of a male nerd with interests in video games, mathematics, the Rubik's Cube, or train schedules. Swedish writer Clara Törnvall, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of forty-two, discovered that her experiences and understanding differ greatly from common perceptions of autism. Therefore, she paints a different picture. In her personal narrative, she blends elements of nonfiction with interviews with autistic women and challenges our views on normality and deviations from the norm. She focuses on a group of women who have remained invisible in society.
