Description

A novel about the transience of time and the constancy of human lives. The old house on the main street just below the square in a small town in the Vysočina region seems to have its own memory. The fates of its inhabitants have been inscribed into its walls since 1695, and the house has much to tell. And so it tells. Primarily about the end of the nineteenth century when a knitting workshop began operating in it, which later became a large and still-functioning factory. About the brave young man Josef Vlkovský, who opened a grocery store here in 1925. About the rapid rise of the business, the opening of a wholesale store, but also about wartime restrictions, family tragedy, nationalization, and confiscation of property. The house tells its own story, intertwining with the tragic fate of the director of the Knop textile factory, and continues through new beginnings and changes in the nineties to the present day. Time flows, the house with the store 'U Vlků' remains. Through the student Anežka, the present reaches out to shake hands with the past. Markéta Hejkalová gradually uncovers the strong fates of the inhabitants of the region in the midst of our country against the backdrop of the story of one house.
