Description
An intimate confession from one of the most significant Danish authors of the twentieth century. In Denmark, this cult trilogy takes readers to Copenhagen between the 1930s and 1970s. Tove Ditlevsen tells her life story — the story of a woman from an ordinary working-class background, from which she tried to escape into the world of literature as soon as possible. The book depicts complex female friendships, loveless and understandingless marriages, motherhood and unwanted pregnancies, romantic infatuations, a split between men, addiction to alcohol and drugs, but above all, an addiction to writing. The author became a famous poet at the age of seventeen, but she also wrote novels, stories, essays, and primarily memoirs. She ended her life in 1976 by suicide. Although contemporary critics did not take her seriously due to her working-class origins and the simple fact that she was a woman, Ditlevsen ultimately emerged as one of the most urgent voices in Danish literature of the twentieth century and continues to resonate with readers around the world today.
