Save the planet? First, we need to explore the climate of our minds. The climate crisis is here and it is real. Mountains of scientific data and evidence simply cannot be ignored. And yet, we manage to do so. However, in addition to the usual suspects (politicians, fossil lobbyists, or the media), there is someone else to blame: our own minds. The search for an answer to the bitter question of the present — why, despite the mounting facts about global warming, we are not really doing much — led climate expert George Marshall into the offices of psychologists, scientific laboratories, activist headquarters, and political offices. Whether it concerns frightened climatologists, conservative activists denying the climate crisis, or cynical politicians, Marshall does not seek the causes of their disputes and differing opinions, but rather observes what they have in common — human psychological and cognitive equipment. It is indeed the defense mechanisms in our heads that react to alarming stimuli from the outside, causing seemingly insurmountable disputes and indifference. Only when we understand what scares us and how we react can we move towards addressing the real threats.
