Description

After the exceptionally successful novel Germans, Jakub Katalpa presents a sophisticated, multi-layered contemporary novel. Květa, after her husband's death, is plagued by feelings of loneliness and uselessness. In the basement of her house, she builds a small room—a den—and waits for a visitor whom she could lock in and to whom she could tell her life story. While Květa tends to her prisoner, Akiko Ikeda is dying of cancer in America. Although she is undergoing chemotherapy, it is not effective, and her husband gradually loses faith in her recovery. Hoang Thi Anh leaves her native Vietnam and embarks on a long journey to Prague to help her daughter manage the household and a small shop. Along the way, she encounters alienation, not only cultural but also familial and generational. Although the protagonists' paths initially run parallel, at one moment they intersect in Prague, only to continue on their own paths thereafter. All three stories thus represent passing by, misunderstandings, and the parallelism of human fates.
