On the floor of a church in northern Sweden lies a dead and ritually mutilated male body. And in the night sky, between the flakes of falling snow, the northern lights dance. Rebecka Martinsson returns to her hometown of Kiruna after years. She had to leave this place under dramatic circumstances and moved to Stockholm, where she works as a tax consultant. Now she is back to help her old friend Sanna, whose brother was horrifically murdered in the church of the religious community he once founded. Beautiful and vulnerable Sanna needs Rebecka's help to clear herself of the suspicions that have fallen upon her after her brother's death. Rebecka finds herself facing a difficult task. In her search for the murderer, she will have to deal not only with police procedures but also confront the rumors circulating within the closed and frightened community. She will have to dig deep into her memory and conscience to confront the dark secret she left behind in Kiruna, hidden beneath a veil of general silence. And she will have to face the murderer, whose intentions are hard to predict...
