Description
This is the first book in the series about police psychologist Sebastian Bergman, a successful Swedish crime debut by Michael Hjorth and Hans Rosenfeldt. A telephone rings at police headquarters: sixteen-year-old Roger has disappeared and his mother is worried. A search is launched, and a group of young scouts soon discovers his mutilated body in a marsh. Someone has cut Roger Eriksson’s heart from his chest. The Swedish criminal investigation unit takes over the case and accepts help from Sebastian Bergman, one of the leading experts on serial killers. Although Sebastian abandoned police work after the deaths of his wife and daughter, he has his own reasons for wanting to join the team. His initially lukewarm attitude gradually turns into a sincere effort to fit the pieces together and identify the killer. Not everyone on the investigation team welcomes Sebastian’s presence. His rough manners and callous behaviour, born of the emptiness he feels after losing his family, verge on intimidation and disrupt the group’s harmony. Despite their personal differences, the investigators discover that all the clues point in one direction: the prestigious private school Roger attended. Palmlöv Upper Secondary School seems at first to be an ideal environment for the boy, but dark secrets lie beneath the surface. The book offers an intelligent and gripping story. It is the first collaboration between Hjorth and Rosenfeldt, spent eight months on Sweden’s bestseller charts after publication, and has also achieved considerable success in Germany. A television adaptation is being produced by ZDF in cooperation with Sweden’s SVT.
