An era of unprecedented flourishing, when extreme works of art are created as if no tomorrow were to come. At the same time, however, there is already a sense of decay in the air, that humanity is losing its innocence. A year when the nineteenth and twentieth centuries collide sharply. Proust searches for lost time, Malevich paints a square, Kafka writes infinitely long and immensely beautiful letters to Felice Bauer, Stravinsky and Schönberg provoke unheard-of scandals, Duchamp mounts a bicycle on a kitchen stool, Kirchner repeatedly paints Potsdamer Platz. Fifteen-year-old Brecht becomes the editor-in-chief of the Augsburg school magazine, and twelve-year-old Louis Armstrong picks up a trumpet for the first time. Joyce and Musil have coffee in Trieste, Freud and Rilke, on the other hand, share a drink in Munich.
