Description
A story about the search for truth and one's place in history, set in Taiwan. Taiwanese Bao tries to have everything firmly in his hands throughout his life. He has a great career, children in prestigious schools, and it even seems that he is not burdened by a dysfunctional relationship with his ex-wife Sedrika. In Taiwan, it’s all about not losing face—no matter what happens. However, everything suddenly changes when Sedrika falls ill with an incurable disease and their son David decides to meet with Uncle Taem, with whom Bao has allegedly fallen out over inheritance. Layers of unspoken family grievances and lies begin to crumble from that moment on, fundamentally changing the lives of everyone around Bao. Nothing is as it seems, and nothing turns out the way the heroes of the novel wish. Bao's character and the story of his family reflect the fate of a heavily tested country and the traumas of ancestors that reach deep into the past. The novel Black Tongues, through the perspectives of various characters, shows the fragility of our notions of values such as truth, duty, honor, or love, and the immense difficulty of expressing oneself genuinely and sincerely.
