When the Earth stops spinning, it doesn't mean the end of human desire for power. Forty years ago, as a result of a cosmic disaster, the Earth's rotation began to slow down, and after ten years, it came to a complete stop. Now one side of the planet is facing the scorching Sun, while the other is trapped in an endless icy night. Most states have ceased to function, but a few fortunate countries on the warm side of the planet have survived. One of them is Great Britain, which saved itself by completely cutting off from the collapsing world. Today, it is ruled by a military autocracy, and the country is plagued by hunger and violence. Ellen Hopper is an oceanographer living on an ice platform in the Atlantic. She has retreated into her voluntary exile after her homeland succumbed to authoritarianism, and she wants nothing to do with it anymore. However, when two officials come to her with a request to return to London and meet a certain dying man, Ellen agrees — and begins to uncover a secret that threatens not only the fragile stability of her nation but all of humanity.
