Description

Poetry as a relationship between the existential and the spiritual, between the mundane, mythical, and religious. The fate, genesis, and reception of the work of Zdeněk Rotrekl (1920—2013) were marked in a fatal and dramatic way by historical circumstances. For participating in the anti-communist resistance, he was imprisoned from 1949 to 1962; after a brief interlude of relaxation at the end of the sixties, he spent the following two decades of normalization as a dissident, persona non grata, and an unpublishable author. With the exception of exile publications, Rotrekl's work reached readers only after 1989. Zizler's monograph addresses the entirety of Rotrekl's oeuvre. It focuses primarily on his poetry but also deals with Rotrekl's remarkable prose texts; in addition to short stories and prose poetry, it includes the novel 'Light Comes in the Dark,' which captures his life story in the form of a distinctive linguistic and formal experiment, as well as radio plays and journalism.
