Description
The current civilization operates in a 24/7 mode. However, this regime conflicts with our biological need for sleep and rest. Sleep is often considered a sign of laziness or a waste of time — it becomes a problem to be solved. In recent years, Western medicine and various industries have increasingly focused on how to reduce the impacts of sleep deprivation on human health. However, this addresses only the consequences, not the causes of the entire epidemic of sleep disorders, creating a paradoxical situation: the problems of industrially managed lives are again addressed by industry. The anthology Rest in Restlessness offers perspectives from cultural theorists, historians, philosophers, and sociologists on the current sleep crisis, which until recently remained on the periphery of interest in the humanities and social sciences. The texts of key authors reveal how modern capitalist management shapes biopolitics — the power to which our bodies and dreams are subjected.
