Description
The novel Zbabělci (1958), through which Josef Škvorecký introduced the character of Danny Smiřický into Czech literature, sparked an extraordinarily controversial cultural-political uproar. The definitive condemnation was voiced in a report by Ladislav Štoll — according to him, Škvorecký's novel did not meet the standards of the time and did not fulfill the desired social and ideological function. Therefore, by order of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, it had to be revised for subsequent editions. The critical edition prepared for the Czech Library by Michael Špirit in 1998 returned to the wording of the first edition. Josef Škvorecký subsequently designated its text as fundamental for all future editions of the novel. The reissue primarily brings an updated accompanying commentary.
