Successful violinist Len Howard decided to leave her career in a London orchestra and move to a cottage in the countryside. In the end, she spent the rest of her life there, dedicating her days to studying birds. The window of the cottage was always open so that sparrows and tits could come and go as they pleased. Although Len was not a trained biologist, she became a pioneering ornithologist in the 1950s: she observed birds based on trust and freedom, recorded their nature and habits, and compiled her findings into numerous articles and two popular books. What prompted Len to radically change her life and step off the beaten path? It may seem that her life in the birdhouse was lonely, but the opposite is true — she spent it in the best company.
