Description
A village waiting to be read: boundaries ploughed through fields and people, a pub, a small shop, home slaughter feasts, infidelity and an unsuccessful funeral. A grandmother and grandfather are joined like two trees, while life remains bound to the soil, animals and farming. This is a story of one contemporary village told through the eyes of its inhabitants. Josef struggles in vain to understand why his son Zbyňa refuses to take over the farm, when there is so much to put right in the fields ruined under the collective farm system. The Vavirci family counts where another crown might be gained, the kind-hearted shop assistant Maruna tries to remain on good terms with everyone, and the butcher Láďa pursues another man’s woman. And little Petruna cannot sit still for a moment. The characters’ natural physical closeness, their shared work, their desire for a better livelihood and their calculating ways are the source of endless quarrels, bonds and futile attempts to heal old wounds. The novel is in Czech.
