Description

The last monograph on ultrasound examination of the hip joint in children was published almost thirty years ago. Since then, examination and prevention of developmental dysplasia of the hip have been standardised, children’s exposure to X-rays has been significantly reduced, and timely diagnosis has considerably lowered the number of necessary operations. The treatment and prevention of congenital and developmental hip defects in children has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. The current system of examinations, known as the triple-screening system, is one of the most thoroughly developed methodological guidelines and serves as a model for many other countries. The relevant guideline has also been revised to require ultrasound examination of the hips and substantially limit the previously used system of X-ray checks. The authors aim to establish a unified system of examination, classification and subsequent treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip. The monograph also presents treatment strategies according to worldwide trends and includes a chapter on examining hip-joint effusion. It supports accurate orientation in ultrasound examination and the early detection and appropriate treatment of developmental and congenital hip defects, helping to unify prevention and detection in paediatric, orthopaedic, ultrasound and X-ray departments.
