Description
To achieve the effect of practically any therapeutic measure, patient cooperation is necessary. With the development of therapy for acute forms of cardiovascular diseases, there is an increasing number of patients with chronic complications requiring long-term pharmacotherapy. A significant area for improvement in patient care is adherence to indicated treatment. If adherence to treatment is low, the effect of therapy will also be limited. According to the World Health Organization, adherence, alongside the availability of therapy, is one of the factors where the treatment of patients can be most improved.
Adherence to medication and its significance varies considerably among different cardiovascular diseases. In arterial hypertension, testing adherence is a basic diagnostic method to determine whether it is therapy-resistant hypertension or just pseudoresistant due to non-adherence to pharmacotherapy. On the other hand, in heart failure, the measured level of adherence is usually quite high, so it can be relied upon that patients are taking their medications, and any change in the patient's condition (for better or worse) is related to the treatment. Equally important is the effective treatment of comorbidities affecting cardiovascular morbidity and mortality (e.g., obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, chronic obstructive...
